IV sedation is not the same as general anesthesia. Most patients continue breathing on their own and can respond to simple directions, though awareness and memory may be limited. Local anesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area.
Because the effects last beyond the appointment, you cannot drive, work, make important decisions, or care for others by yourself afterward.

What To Expect
Consultation And Screening
Your consultation includes a review of medical conditions, medications, allergies, previous sedation experiences, and the planned treatment. Follow all instructions about food, drinks, and medications exactly. Do not decide on your own to skip a prescribed medicine; ask our team what to do.
Arranging Your Day
Arrange for a responsible adult to bring you to the office, remain available, take you home, and stay with you for the time specified in your instructions. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid scheduling obligations for the rest of the day. If your health changes before the visit, call us. Illness, new medications, or changes in symptoms may affect whether it is safe to proceed.
Sedation And Treatment
Once the IV is placed and medication begins, we adjust the level based on your response. Throughout the appointment we continuously monitor your vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, and breathing, so any change is seen and addressed right away. The dental treatment area is also numbed.
Recovery And Discharge
After treatment, you recover in the office until you meet the discharge criteria for going home with your escort. Drowsiness and limited memory are common. Follow the written aftercare instructions, rest, and have your escort contact Toothology if there is any concern.
The First 24 Hours After IV Sedation

IV sedation works within minutes, can be turned up or down during care, and is generally the better choice for high anxiety, longer procedures, a strong gag reflex, or trouble getting numb. How Long Do The Effects Last?
The deepest part of the sedation ends when the medication is stopped, and most patients are ready to leave with their escort within an hour or so of finishing treatment. Grogginess, slower reflexes, and patchy memory can last the rest of the day, which is why the 24-hour restrictions apply.
Do I Need Someone To Drive Me?
