Deep Cleaning

Non-Surgical Perio Therapy (NSPT) also called Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing or “Deep Cleaning”

Congratulations on completing your periodontal scaling and root planing procedure! Proper aftercare is essential for a successful recovery and optimal healing. Please follow these post-operative instructions to ensure the best possible outcomes:

Bleeding: Minor bleeding or oozing from the gums is normal after the procedure especially if on blood thinners or taking aspirin. Gently bite down on a piece of gauze or a moist black tea bag placed over the treated area to help control bleeding. Change the gauze or tea bag as needed. If bleeding persists or becomes excessive, contact our office.

Pain Management: You may experience some discomfort and/or tooth sensitivity after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be taken as directed to alleviate any discomfort.

Swelling: Minor swelling of the gums and face may occur, especially if the procedure was extensive. Applying a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling. Make sure not to apply ice directly to the skin to prevent damage to the gum tissues.

Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for a successful recovery. However, you should be gentle around the treated area. Here's how to care for your mouth after the procedure:

● Brushing: Resume gentle brushing the day after the procedure. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush carefully along the gumline. Avoid brushing the treated area aggressively.

● Flossing: Avoid flossing the treated area for the first 24 hours if SRP was conducted alone. If the laser was used then abstain from flossing for 72 hours. After that, gently resume flossing, being careful not to irritate the gums. C-Shaped technique.

● WaterPik: Can be resumed 72 hours after the procedure.

● Mouthwash: Your dentist may recommend a mild, alcohol-free mouthwash to use after brushing and flossing. Rinse as directed, usually twice a day.

Diet: For the first 24 hours following the procedure, stick to soft and lukewarm foods. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the treated area. Gradually reintroduce your regular diet as you feel comfortable.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: If you smoke, avoid doing so for at least 48 hours after the procedure. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications. Similarly, avoid consuming alcoholic beverages for a couple of days, as alcohol can irritate the treated area.

Medications: Take any prescribed antibiotics and pain medication as directed by your dentist. Please finish the entire course of antibiotics to prevent superbugs or re- infection. If having GI issues please contact the office.

Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist or periodontist. These visits are essential to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.

Oral Habits: Avoid habits that can worsen gum disease, such as clenching or grinding your teeth. If you have an occlusal guard, splint or sleep appliance wear it as recommended.

Remember, proper post-operative care is vital for the success of your periodontal treatment. By following these instructions and maintaining good oral hygiene practices, you can help ensure a healthy and strong foundation for your teeth and gums.
