Do You Need a Nightguard?

Are you one of the many Americans that grinds or clenches your teeth while you sleep? Chances are, you may need a nightguard.

What are nightguards?

A nightguard, also known as an occlusal guard, occlusal splint or a bite splint, is a plastic device placed on top of your teeth to help prevent clenching (biting down with pressure) and grinding (moving jaw back and forth) while you sleep. The plastic forms a protective layer that separates your top and bottom teeth and prevents damage by allowing your teeth to wear down the guard, rather than wearing down your teeth.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is simply the act of excessivley clenching or biting your teeth and often occurs when we’re sleeping or under immense amounts of stress. Bruxism affects 10–15% of adults according to the American Dental Association.
